Scholar Events
Our volunteers lead with the purest of hearts. All of our volunteers are dedicated to Pure Heart Foundation scholars and programming. Each volunteer joins pure heart with a unique skillset and becomes a part of our mission for empowering children of incarcerated parents.
OUR VOLUNTEER STAFF
Our volunteer staff assist with Pure Heart programming utilizing a specialized skillset. This includes our program assistants, family advocates, and administrative assistants. The volunteer staff seen here are in addition to our amazing program leads listed under our staff page.
Shaffwan Ahmed
Recreation & Arts Assistant
Shaffwan is a Detroit born and raised community activist and organizer. He is currently working on his Masters of Business Administration. His passion is revitalizing and building up small businesses and nonprofits in Detroit. At Pure Heart, he is a scholar mentor and a volunteer for events and field trips! Shaffwan has volunteered over 20 hours with us!
Nekeia Barksdale
Social Media & Marketing Assistant
Nekeia was born in Detroit and has explored many places in Michigan. She's a strong mother (ft. Brooke) and a current graduate student at University of Michigan School of Public Health. She is passionate about advocating for systemic changes around social injustices including racism, prison reform, and sexual assault. At Pure Heart, she assists with social media and marketing as well as communication with families. She has dedicated over 10 hours to Pure Heart so far this year!
Fatima Eid
Enrichment Assistant
Fatima has a passion for working with young people while watching them prosper and grow. Fatima graduated with her BA in Sociology and Masters in Public Health from Wayne State University. Fatima is dedicated to public service and hopes to continue working on projects focused on policy and community. Her favorite hobbies include going to the gym, spending time with her family, and her tuxedo cat, Figaro! At Pure Heart, she assists with developing and facilitating scholar enrichment activities and groups. Fatima has dedicated over 10 hours to Pure Heart so far!
Sarah Stanz
Research Assistant
Sarah is an upcoming graduate student at the University of Michigan's Social Work Program and aspiring to help those affected by incarceration. She is passionate about seeking out and serving people who commonly go unseen in their struggles. At Pure Heart, she is helping build up the Mental Health & Wellness program. She loves to go bird watching and eat ice cream! Sarah has volunteered over 35 hours so far!

OUR VOLUNTEER TUTORS
Our volunteer tutors work directly with scholars by volunteering during our after school programming by helping with homework or tutoring in a specialized subject.

OUR VOLUNTEER MENTORS
Our volunteer mentors work with an individual Pure Heart Scholar. They provide their Scholar with positive mentorship through goal setting, relationship building, and positive encouragement.
Matthew Jo
Mentor
Matt recently graduated with a BA in Sport Management from the University of Michigan and currently works full-time as a campus missionary with New Life Church Ann Arbor. He loves to play sports and spend time getting to know people. He is passionate about helping create opportunities and development for those who commonly go overlooked. Matt is working with Pure Heart to establish and build up the mentorship pillar as he brings in his own mentoring experience and passions.
OUR EVENT VOLUNTEERS
Our event volunteers assist Pure Heart staff at our events. They are a huge help as they sign families into events, pack scholar care boxes, pass out beverages, deliver food boxes to families, and so much more!
Sunday Fauci
Event Volunteer
Sunday believes that children are the future leaders of our community and by connecting each scholar with people and services to support their goals, we will break the cycle of generational incarceration. She brings 20 years of leadership to Pure Heart. She is currently managing the Michigan sales team, real estate development, training programs, and marketing strategies for Cricket Wireless. She studied business administration at SUNY Broome in New York. In her free time, she enjoys running, hiking, and biking, and traveling. At Pure Heart, she assists with coordinating and facilities events and field trips!
