“I operate on the belief that each one us view the world from a unique perspective. I want our scholars to flourish in their own world, knowing that they are unique and hold power by just being them.”
Shayla is the Operations Manager for Pure Heart Foundation. She is a dedicated, passionate, and strategic leader. She is devoted to evidence-based social work and program development. Shayla loves watching young people and professionals reach their full potential. Her focus in our foundation is operationalizing our programs and building strong community partnerships. Shayla is known for her energetic spirit and colleagues have jokingly introduced her as “a walking google” throughout her career.
She received her Bachelor’s of Social Wok from Wayne State University with a focus in Peace and Conflict Studies and is currently working towards her Master’s in Public Health at the University of Michigan. Shayla is also a racial equity fellow at Detroit Equity and Action Lab.
Most of Shayla’s career has been focused on community and capacity building, resource coordination, and nonprofit organizations. Her love for data and organizing was first developed with the Michigan Roundtable of Diversity and Inclusion and has taken her as far as Kabale, Uganda where she worked with Kigezi Health Care Foundation. Before Pure Heart, her work focused on the issues of gun violence and community civic engagement.
She grew up near the east side of Detroit and currently calls the North End neighborhood her home. Shayla spends her free time walking her dog, Izzy, reading historical fiction, and traveling (pre-pandemic of course).
