Have a Parent in Prison

Currently 2.7 Million children in the U.S has a parent incarcerated and 5.1 Million children in the U.S has had a parent incarcerated at some point in their lives. 228,000 children in Michigan alone have had a parent incarcerated before reaching the age of 10 ranking Michigan in the top ten states with children of incarcerated parents. Studies suggest that children with incarcerated parents are seven times more likely to be entangled in the criminal justice system based on their parent's incarceration. COIP are more likely to suffer from emotional, social, educational and financial distress. 

 

Since 2006, 32,000 incarcerated parents have had their children permanently taken from them. 

 

1 out of 10 youth in Michigan has a parent incarcerated. 4 out of 10 youth in Detroit, Michigan has a parent incarcerated. 

 

We serve 250 scholars yearly by providing wraparound services that address our scholars' silent struggles and support their emotional, social, educational and financial needs.
